Guidelines for the Farms and Barns Project

OBJECTIVE: to catalog/record all Marshall farms since 1800.

PROCEDURES AND SCOPE: to gather information about farms

  1. owners through the years.
  2. number of acres tillable, wooded, etc.
  3. crops harvested-number of acres in each by year
  4. variety and number of animals
  5. number of family farm workers and hired hands (if any)
  6. collect old photos of houses, barns, out buildings (silos, chicken coops, hop kiln, ice house, milk house, corn crib, windmill) Pictures of workers in the fields or barns.
  7. current pictures of farm buildings
  8. sketch of buildings and road, etc.
  9. A survey form to collect farm data to include:
    1. 911 street address
    2. age and measurements of buildings, houses etc.
    3. architecture style: gambrel roof etc.
    4. building materials; clapboard, board and batten, etc.
    5. embellishments: cupolas, trim
    6. water supply source: spring, well
  10. Organize project by streets and roads in Town of Marshall
  11. Volunteers for each road, part of a road, or individual farms

OUTCOME-end product: a booklet of barns and farms in Marshall which would include some farm history, farm statistics, pictures, farm descriptions of individual farms, etc. A history of farms and barns and farming in Marshall Township.
